Laptop Volume Booster: How to Make Laptop Speakers Louder

Quick answer

To make a laptop louder, first set the system volume and the app's own volume to 100% and check your sound settings for any enhancement or loudness option. If the quiet sound is in your browser, a laptop volume booster extension such as Sound Booster Max raises a Chrome tab above 100%, up to 600%. For sound outside the browser you need system-level software or external speakers.

Thin laptops have thin speakers. They are fine for a call in a quiet room and not much more, so a film with soft dialogue or a quietly recorded video can be hard to hear even with every slider at the top. Work through the free fixes first, then add a booster where it helps.

Step 1: check every volume control

Sound passes through several controls on its way to the speakers, and any one of them can be low. (Website volume vs system volume explains how they stack.)

  • System volume. The speaker icon in the taskbar or menu bar.
  • App volume. On Windows, open the volume mixer and check that your browser is not set lower than other apps.
  • The player's slider. Video sites have their own volume control in the player.
  • Output device. Make sure sound is going to the laptop speakers and not a disconnected headset or monitor.

Step 2: look for a loudness setting

  • Windows. In Sound settings, open your speakers' properties. Depending on your audio driver you may see an audio enhancement or "Loudness Equalization" option, which raises quiet passages.
  • Mac. In System Settings under Sound, check the output volume and balance. Balance pushed to one side makes everything seem quieter.
  • Chromebook. Use the volume keys and check the output in Quick Settings. Our Chromebook guide has more.

Step 3: boost the browser tab

Most of what people watch and listen to on a laptop plays in the browser, and that is where a browser volume booster can go past 100%.

  1. Add Sound Booster Max to Chrome and pin the green icon.
  2. Play the video or audio in a tab.
  3. Click the green icon. A small control window opens.
  4. Raise the slider. Start around 200% and adjust.

This amplifies the audio signal for that tab before it reaches your speakers, so quiet material uses more of what the speakers can deliver.

How loud can laptop speakers really go?

A booster cannot make speakers more powerful than they are. What it does is raise quiet audio up to the level the speakers can play. If the source is already loud, extra boost only adds distortion: buzzing or crackling on loud notes. When you hear that, lower the slider.

If you regularly need more than the speakers can give, hardware is the honest answer:

  • Headphones. Even inexpensive ones are far clearer than laptop speakers, and they play at lower actual volume for the same clarity.
  • A small external or Bluetooth speaker. The biggest improvement for watching with other people.

What a browser extension cannot boost

Sound Booster Max works on audio inside Chrome tabs. It does not change desktop apps such as media players, games or meeting apps installed on your computer. For those, see volume boosters for PC.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my laptop so quiet at full volume?

Usually a combination of small speakers and quiet source material. Occasionally an app volume or enhancement setting is turned down. Work through the steps above in order.

Is a laptop sound booster safe for the speakers?

Used sensibly, yes. Sustained heavy distortion at high volume is what stresses small speakers, so back off when the sound starts to break up. See is a volume booster extension safe?

Does a laptop volume booster work with headphones?

Yes. It boosts the tab's audio whatever the output. Be more careful with headphones, since high levels reach your ears directly.
